Every Filipino employee in the private sector contributes monthly to SSS or the Social Security System of the Philippine Government, but not every every SSS member understand the benefits they can avail or how the SSS works. We will provide summarize view of the Social Security System.


What is SSS?

It is a state-run, social insurance in the Philippines to workers in the private, professional, and informal sectors. Established by virtue of Republic Act No.1161, better known as Social Security Act of 1954. The SSS provides retirement and health benefits to all paid up employees in the Philippines.


Who Can Register in SSS?

As a worker in the private sector, a self-employed or a voluntary member or as an Overseas Filipino Worker, you can be assured of social protection.

There are two types of coverages under the SS Program:

Compulsory Coverage

Employers
  • A social, civic, professional, charitable, and other non-profit organization that hires the services of employees are also considered “employers.”
  • A foreign government or international organization, or its wholly-owned instrumentalities, such as an embassy in the Philippines, with an approved Administrative Agreement with the SSS for the coverage of its Filipino workers.
  • household employer is one who uses the services of a house helper; whomever pays the compensation for such services – whether the husband, wife, or any other person – shall be deemed the household employer.
Employees
  • A private employee, whether permanent, temporary or provisional, who is not over 60 years old.
  • A household-helper earning at least P1,000 a month is compulsory covered starting Sept. 1, 1993. A household-helper is any person who renders domestic services exclusively to a household such as driver, gardener, cook, governess, and other similar occupations.
  • A Filipino seafarer upon the signing of the standard contract of employment between the seafarers and the manning agency which, together with the foreign ship owner, act as employers.
  • An employee of a foreign government, international organization or their wholly owned instrumentality based in the Philippines, which entered into an administrative agreement with the SSS for the coverage of its Filipino workers.
  • The parent, spouse or child below 21 years old of the owner of a single proprietorship business.
Self-Employed

A self-employed person, regardless of trade, business or occupation, with an income of at least P1,000 a month and not over 60 years old, should register with the SSS. Included, but not limited to are the following self-employed persons.

  • self-employed professionals
  • business partners
  • single proprietors
  • board directors
  • actors & actresses
  • directors
  • scriptwriters
  • news reporters who are not under an employer-employee relationship
  • professional athletes
  • coaches
  • trainers and jockeys
  • farmers and fisherfolks
  • workers in the informal sector such as cigarette vendors,
  • watch-your-car boys
  • hospitality girls and etc.

Voluntary Coverage

Separated Members

A member who is separated from employment or ceased to be self-employed/OFW/non-working spouse and would like to continue contributing.

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)

A Filipino recruited in the Philippines by a foreign-based employer for employment abroad or one who legitimately entered a foreign country (i.e. tourist, student) and is eventually employed.

Non-working Spouses of SSS members

A person legally married to a currently employed and actively paying SSS member who devotes full-time in the management of household and family affairs may be covered on a voluntary basis provided there is the approval of the working spouse. The person should never have been a member of the SSS. The contributions will be based on 50 percent of the working spouse’s last posted monthly salary credit but in no case shall it be lower than P1,000.

How to Check SSS Contributions Online?

SSS members and pensioners can now check their SSS contributions online monthly premiums and loan balances anytime you want. SSS member contribution is updated from contributions from the past until the present.

  • Visit the SSS website
  • Log in to your My.SSS account
  • Go to the Member Inquiry page
  • Go to the Contributions – Actual Premiums page

Go to the SSS website’s online registration page

The web page will show five options. Choose one information you’ve previously registered in SSS.

  • Savings Account Number / Citibank Cash Card / UBP Quick Card / UMID – ATM Saving Account Number Registered in SSS
  • Mobile Number Registered in SSS
  • UMID CARD
  • Employer ID Number / Household Employer ID Number
  • Payment Reference Number / SBR No. / Payment Receipt Transaction Number

Fill out the required information in the online form

Make sure you completely fill up all required information.

  • Your last name, given name, middle name – You can leave the Middle Name field blank if you have no middle name.
  • Date of birth – use the drop-down calendar in inputting to prevent an error in your birth date.

If you chose “UMID CARD”, the online form will ask for your UMID card pin code.

Don’t have the pin code yet? You have to activate your UMID card first in the SSS information terminal at select SSS branches.

Note: Don’t forget to enter the captcha code at the bottom of the page and tick the small box next to “I accept the Terms of Service.”

When you’re done, double-check all information. Click the Submit button. A short message will appear to confirm the successful submission of your enrollment for SSS online registration. Click OK.

Check your email address for confirmation link.

After you submit your SSS registration online application, SSS will verify your information on its records. After they verify your account information you’ll receive an email confirmation. The message contains an activation link and your user ID.

If you can’t find email from SSS after an hour on your primary mail just check your Spam folder it should be there.

Activate your My.SSS account

Once you receive the email confirmation from SSS, click on the activation link to confirm. The activation link will expire within 120 hrs, and you need to register again.

After clicking the link you will be directed to a page where you’ll be required to create a password. Make sure your password strong enough and you can easy to remember or simply write it down.

When you’re done, click the Submit button. You will be directed immediately to your My.SSS account.


How to Apply SSS Salary Loan?

A borrower may file the salary loan application at the branch nearest your place of residence. A member who is registered at My.SSS can submit the salary loan application via online. The salary loan submitted online by an employed member will be directed to the employer’s My.SSS account for certification, remember that the employer should also have an SSS account.

OFW members may also file their salary loan application at the SSS Foreign Representative Offices in selected countries. If there there is no SSS office in a particular country they may send their application and supporting documents to their relatives here in the Philippines and authorize them to file at the SSS branch. Documents issued in other country should be duly authenticated or certified by the Philippine Consulate Embassy.

  • Check if you are eligible for a salary loan – You must be under the age of 65 at the time of your application, currently employed and currently contributing to social security.
  • Register for an online account – create your My.SSS account if you don’t have yet. See above how to register SSS online.
  • Complete the salary loan application – complete SSS salary loan application online through your my.SSS account, or you can get a paper application from any SSS branch nearest your place.
  • Submit your application online – Submit your application using your My.SSS account or bring your application to SSS branch nearest you if you can’t submit it online.
  • Receive your funds – You will receive your salary loan according to the method you chose on your loan application.
  • Make sure you pay your payments as indicated – generally payable in 24 monthly installments and should pay on monthly basis as indicated.

If filed by Member-borrower’s Authorized Representative

  • Member-borrower’s duly accomplished Member Loan Application
  • Authorized Representative’s SS card or any two valid IDs both with signature and at least one with photo
  • Letter of Authority (LOA) signed by both the member-borrower and member-borrower’s authorized representative
  • Member-borrower’s SS card or any two valid IDs both with signature and at least one with photo.

If filed by Employer/Company’s Authorized Representative

  • Member-borrower’s duly accomplished Member Loan Application
  • Authorized Company Representative (ACR) card issued by SSS
  • Letter of Authority (LOA) from employer and any two (2) valid IDs both with signature and at least one with photo
  • Member-borrower’s SS card or in its absence, Application for SS card (SS Form E-6) acknowledgment stub and any two valid Ids both with signature and at least one with photo.

Original or certified true copies of the supporting documents should be presented during the filing of the claim.

Can a Voluntary, Self-Employed or OFW member increase their SSS contributions?

Yes, As a voluntary SSS member, you have the flexibility to increase the amount of your monthly contribution, unlike the SSS Employed members their contribution is automatically computed based on their monthly salary.

However, as a Voluntary paying SSS members, there is a restriction implemented by SSS when it comes to the changing of the SSS Contribution amount that you will be paying.

SSS members can now easily check there contribution and apply for loan online without going to the nearest branches just simply create online account to My.SSS website make sure you correctly provide the correct information upon registration. While still young and capable to work much better to increase your SSS contribution you will be entitled to more benefits once you start paying higher contributions.
